Reflective View of an Internship
Theories to Practice
Interns should be
Stimulated to use learned skills in a real world contexts. The internship
should be creating goals that foster motivation, Enable interns to evaluate and
calculate their personal progress. Interns should be using a variation of
management strategies and tools to build connections between indistinct
concepts and reality-based scenarios. Interns pushed to work together to solve
problems and engage in discussions learn important team building and problem
solving skills. (Pappas, 2013)
Communication is
an important part if internships. The company should provide interns with an
introduction to the program, culture, and the tools of the trade. Communicating
with the intern regularly is very important, to provide information and
answering any questions they may have. Interns should have direction,
instruction, and a good support team to help them integrate into the program.
(DePaul University, 2015)
Personal Experience
My personal
experience with the the internship company has been stressful and unrewarding.
I was very pleased to learn that I would be the Manager, and that
is where the good feelings stop. I have not received any training or
instruction on how to fulfill my duties as the Radio Manager, or even what they
are. There have been no tasks given to
my section. I have not even been able to acquire the proper log in information
for the software I am to be using.
I have however,
made the most of the information I have. I have watched you tube videos on the
software provided and learned everything I can from the very vague PowerPoints
I have received. Communication has been set up with other new interns; we share
the information we all have so we can at least learn something.
Professional Assessment
The company is a
business under the umbrella of a consulting company. The first week of this internship
has been stressful and unrewarding. There has been no training, or direction
given to inform the interns of the tasks and requirements asked of them. After
a week the internships should, at the very least, know what the job description
is and a little of the process to get it done. There has even been problems
with receiving the correct log in information to the software, which is regularly
used. It appears as if the only people communication are the ones with no
answers, trying to figure it out.
Practiced Course Outcomes and Professional Competencies
The course outcome
for this week, as seen in the rubric, is to evaluate information management,
planning and control in business systems. The only evaluating I have done has
been in this essay I have not planned anything nor have I had any control in
business systems. I have feelings of abandonment, confusion and the feeling of
being completely lost.
I have however,
been part of a few meetings which I feel where done well for what they were
designed for. The communication in my chain of command is good and prompt, we
just do not know anything.
Solution
The company needs
to implement a job description chain to pass down from outgoing intern to new
incoming intern in that position. In the last week of an interns work they
should update the information given to them when they first started. This
information will reflect any changes or shortcuts that may have occurred during
their stent in the position. Doing this, will help the incoming intern better
understand what The company expects from them.
