1976 Judgement of Wine

 1976 Judgement of Wine

I am writing you to inform you about what had occurred on May 24, 1976 a wine tasting as taken placed in Paris that changed the perspective views of California wine. Steven Spurrier, an English wine merchant who owned a wine store and an adjacent wine school L’Academie du Vin where Americans worked in France that learned about wine.
What happened on the 24th of May, 1976 is that California wine has entered into the wine tasting, which Red Bordeaux and white Burgundies went against the California Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnay.  The American wine producer decided to partake in this challenge because Steven Spurrier was very intrigued by California Cabernet and Chardonnay. Apparently Steven Spurrier served young or underage French wine against California wines.
From my opinion if American wine producers didn’t partake in this challenge, then California grape varietals wouldn’t be common, or that we would only assume that French wines are the best.  Also that California wine would be less common and known if they didn’t do the challenge.

Reflective Internship Essay

Reflective Internship Essay

The University Consulting internship provides prospective interns the ability to build a more appropriate professional presence and repertoire.  In an effort to achieve this they provide numerous processes that empower interns to experience practices that would be used in a typical business atmosphere.  They also instruct them on knowledge that will allow them to evaluate information management, planning and control business environments, analyze organization processes and procedures in a variety of business settings, synthesis appropriate principles, concepts, and frameworks for making ethical decisions, assess the roles that structure, management, and leadership play in organizational performance, evaluate how economics, government, and law affect value creation in the global context, and evaluate career skills in the field of business and management.
One important aspect of management is known as controlling.  Controlling involves ensuring that performance does not deviate from the set standards outlined by the organization.  This process consists of three steps, establishing performance standards, comparison of actual performance against standards, and taking corrective action as needed.  When entering into the internship it is outlined that each intern is required to meet a ten hour a week minimum.  This is tracked and evaluated using a developed program known as time clock which tracks when each intern clocks in and out.  The intern is also responsible for notating what job related activities they are conducting at that time.  This is known as a performance record and it coincides will the billable hours sheet which must be submitted no later than the end of business each Friday.  After submission these reports are transferred to the Director of Operations for comparison of actual performance and if any discrepancies are found corrective action will be taken
University Consulting being student run organization has enabled it to become subject to complications.  It was easy to identify early on that there were relevant issues in the subject of leadership as not every participant of the organization was able to properly evaluate the information being provided to them and distribute the information downstream as necessary.  Others lacked the ability to utilize information planning which is an important aspect in information management.  Planning is a function of management that requires individuals to set objectives and determine the appropriate course of action for achieving said objectives. Although in the infancy stage of the internship it should be noted that there should be an adequate level of planning and organization prior to the inclusion of the interns if the expectation is that the organization is not slowed or even brought to a halt in the process of adding new people.
Organizing is the function of management that involves the development of organizational structure and allocating human resources to ensure the accomplishments of objectives. Properly utilizing organization involves how to best departmentalize, or cluster jobs into departments to effectively coordinate effort.  From the beginning it was easy to determine that there were multiple levels of organization taking place in University Consulting.  They properly and effectively distributed individual interns into teams and advised them of their team leaders and their clients as well as their Director of Operations.  Through proper use of organizing one can then begin to lead. Leading is the ability to influence others towards the attainment of organizational objectives.  This requires leaders to properly communicate and motivate their subordinates and effectively use power.
Motivated individuals are more likely to be both creative and productive than those individuals that are unmotivated.  In fact behavioral psychologists have developed various theories relating to motivation and they created these theories as a means to more effectively understand and control human behavior.  For instance Elton Mayo developed a theory of motivation that examined the social needs of the worker.  His beliefs were that money alone was not a sufficient means to properly motivate employees to be productive and instead recommended that employers treat their workers in a caring and humane fashion that reflects an active interest in the individual.  Being in contact on a regular basis and through multiple means members of University Consulting are showing that level of interest.  They are actively engaging with interns and encouraging others to seek more opportunities as well as having an open door policy.
To properly evaluate University Consulting one must understand the ultimate goal of the program.  This organizations role is to prepare interns to be productive professionals.  They do this by implementing various tasks such as time clocks and sheets, training and meetings, and the option to advance within the company after a set period of time.  They expect each and every individual to uphold moral and ethical standards as defined in their Employee Handbook as well as their Non-Disclosure Agreements which are in place for the protection of the individual, the organization, and the client.  These tasks allow each and every individual to use professional competences such as interpersonal skills, communication skills, technical expertise, time management, and goal setting.  It is foreseeable that these skills will be added to as more challenges are presented and more projects are given. At this time it seems as though this program is highly beneficial and greatly needed for the future of these interns.

Reflective Internship Paper

-->

Reflective Internship Paper

The first week of the internship programs should always start off smooth and have a well-designed course of action. For the University Radio internship that was not the case. The University Radio works and runs the university’s radio broadcast. This internship started off on the wrong foot. The problems that the internship faced in the first week was lack of communication, lack of leadership, and over-well unorganized chaos.
            It is important for any internship to have communication within the business or program in general. Communication is key to having a successful program. In the first week of the internship for the University Radio was nonexistent in the first initial days of the internship. This left many of the interns within the program with tons of questions that were not answered. For the internship it is mentioned in the beginning that each internship has to have 10 work hours for each week in actual internship program. Communication was established until the very last few days of the Unit 1 week. Since this internship is online to establish a good form of communication would be idea for the University Radio. The lack of communication was part of the lack of leadership in the first week.
The leadership for the internship during the first week was also nonexistent. Due to the leader of the internship being sick, information being sent out to the intern was lagged and sent at the last minute. This causes problems for many interns because of the Unit 1 assignment being due at the end of the week. Information that needed to be sent out was only then sent out by the co-manager of the program when the better part of the week was already through. When having assignments that coincide with the internship first week of work it causes not only problems with the academic portion of the class but also the work side of the program as well. It was only after the interns had their first meeting when communication and leadership was established. By then the bad taste was already left the interns’ mouths about the program.
            One way that the University Radio can avoid this situation from happening in the next semester is by having a solid course of action. When the leader of the program has a personal emergency and matter that cannot be held off, the co-manager of the program should be able to step up and take over the things that were left from the leader. By having a back-up leader that can step up and give the vital information needed for the interns to get started on their journey to a successful program would not only help the interns but also help remove some repeated emails of questions that the leader should be able to answer.
            Organization is also what was lacked in the first week in University Radio. The emails the interns received were from different people with different information some that did not pertain that the internship caused a lot of confusion for the interns in which meetings and information were necessary to remember to attend or do. The internship in general should have a sight overhaul in how the information for the program is sent out to the interns. For instance the email in regards to the weekly team meetings should be sent not only to the Kaplan email address but also the personal email address as well. This will give the interns two email notifications that they need to attend that meeting. As far as meetings go the time that the meetings are schedule are that the very end of the week which makes too hard to grasp the work that needs to be done during that week. The unit week should start off with the meeting as every intern and leader is coming in with a clear head and also it allows for questions about the previous work week to be answered if there is a need for clarification.
            All in all the University Radio week was not the most effective way to engage the new interns and with the changes listed, the problems can become a thing in the past. University Radio has the potential to change the first impression given to the interns and makes the program a positive experience.

Information Management, Planning, & Controls in an Internship

-->

Introduction

The internship companies goal is to provide quality service to the community not for profit organizations and internal services to The University to help farther the success of professional disciplines offered by the university. The focus this week was providing the new interns with training and necessary tools they will need for their new roles. The current organizational structure of UniversityRadio is as follows; Manager, Editor, Scheduler, Social Media, and Consultant. The current UniversityRadio manager was promoted to I/O Director of UniversityConsulting, and an incoming intern was selected to fill the position. The other interns were assigned roles of Editor, Scheduler, Social Media, and Consultant and also given tasks to complete. Collaborations with the Happy Health Hub and Toys For Tots were discussed during the weekly AHOD meeting and each department was informed on what projects other UniversityConsulting departments were working on. The remainder of the week consisted of each team member working on their assigned tasks and becoming familiar with UniversityRadio’s processes.

Information Management, Planning, & Controls

”Communication prevents employees from feeling isolated, builds teamwork, and creates a more collegial atmosphere in the office” (Smith, E., 2015). This week there were challenges with information management. Some of the new intern paperwork sent out was unable to be edited through Google Drive, causing a delay of documents being returned to HR. As a solution, the incoming manager decided it would be best for each team member to have their own folder, especially for storing documents related to that particular role. He also assigned the task of creating a UniversityRadio handbook to the Editor so future interns will have a clear understanding of what is expected of them.
Each team member was instructed on how to download Audacity and Lame, two software programs that assist in UniversityRadio daily operations. Audacity gives users the ability to import/export music files, create new audio files, or edit existing audio files.  Lame is used when the files need exported. The team was also given the username and password for Live365, the platform that is used to broadcast UniversityRadio, so new audio files can be imported and added to new playlists.

Conclusion

Major reorganization has occurred since UniversityRadio has been under new management and it is for the betterment of UniversityRadio and UniversityConsulting as a whole. Simplifying processes and communicating more effectively will foster a positive and productive work environment for interns to thrive in. Not only is this beneficial to UniversityRadio interns’ experiential learning, but also for the growth and future success.

Experiential Learning Reflection Essay

-->
Introduction
      The responsibility of the Research Department is to look for and research non-profit organizations.  The Research rep will start to research for organizations within their local area.  Things to consider are churches, clothing banks, basically any place that will help the community.  Once the non-profit organizations have been found then they will do more research on the specific website related to the organization.  Once they are on the web site they are responsible for researching the organizations sites and looking for contacts, whether it’s the president, marketing director, coordinator, however, sometimes they won’t be able to locate a specific person so they can just use the organizations email.  Being in the research department you are responsible for researching non-profit organizations website locating the contact and email them a template to try and get their interest.  After the first email they will wait 24-48 for a response, if they don’t receive any response then they send a follow up email.  Once they get a response back accepting they then add this information to the client intake form and email them back advising they will forward the information to the sales and marketing team.  The research department and sales and marketing department work hand and hand for the company.  They can face issues if a contact doesn’t reach back out to them but every contact may not respond.  Some of the observations the student observed is not having all the tools immediately and having those feelings of being overwhelmed.  Now that week 1 is over she is seen a decrease in the nerves and not being so overwhelmed.
Career skills in the field of business and management
            The experiences and observations that have been noticed involve a lot around having the career skills within business and management.  There are going to be certain skills she will need to know and understand to be effective in the business and management.  Some things she might want to understand is Business acumen its knowing the company’s business (Seabrook, 2003).  One main key is communication this is one she will need to follow along with her classmates.  By having those important communications skills whether they are verbal or written will be a huge factor to develop within the business (Seabrook, 2003).  Since she’s has been a leader in her daily job she was able to implement leadership skills now.  It’s known that leaders do make significant business decisions, they lead by example, have a sense of character (Seabrook, 2003).  She can also improve on her soft skills, she can gain information in active listening to everyone, resolving any type of conflict effectively, providing any form of feedback, leading by example inspiring others, just to name a few (Douglas, 2003).
Information Management, Planning, and control in business environments.
            With more observation she did come to realization that there needs to be some form of business process here.  It’s known that business processes happen each day that are a part of the jobs daily life (Kent, 2005, 01).  By having strong and successful business processes this can help with the strategic planning of the job.  BPM is known not only to factor on solving process but also promote the culture shift within the company (Kent, 2005, 01).  A company has four key dimensions that they must elaborate to avoid and unhealthy tension in the enterprise. Throughout the organization the people who are involved are the ones that use this information. The process is the information that is related that must be accomplished. Culture is how things are done in the information environments. Infrastructure is the information-related to technologies, policies, tools and the governance that is involved (Hatcher & Prentice, 2004).  These are good policies and factor she can apply to her management, planning techniques.  An organization must know where it stands by constantly evaluating how to operate, consolidate, integrate, optimize, and innovate (Hatcher & Prentice, 2004).   By evaluating these existing resource, it can more effectively suggest future improvement to evolve in a way that will achieve the best possible results (Hatcher & Prentice, 2004).
Conclusion
The student is gaining the understanding she is an asset to the company along with her co-interns. Both her instructors, other interns have stated they are all here for her and the others.  They are all wanting everyone to succeed and help us make it through this experience.  By knowing this it has put her stress at ease a bit.

Numi Organic Tea Information

-->
Antecedents of Target Marketing

“Markets can be segmented using a single variable, such as age group, or several variables, such as age group, gender, and education. Although it is less precise, single-variable segmentation has the advantage of being simpler and easier to use than multiple-variable segmentation.” (pp 129) In this case, the Vice President for Marketing for Numi Organic Tea describes their target consumer which is “Female, Educated, probably college educated, loves tea, buying 2 or 3 boxes a month, generally green tea drinker who is interested in Organic food”. They came to this conclusion probably through online panels, and market research and see what kind of customers were interested in learning more about their product.

As mentioned earlier, Numi Marketing team as identified college educated females who would be interested in Organic foods. As Cofounder and CEO of Numi Organic Tea describes it “ In positioning of our brand, we really wanted to target a certain type of customer base from the natural health food stores to fine dining restaurants in hotels to university coffee shops”. So their plan is to promote their product where their target consumer would frequent. So of course having their tea sampled at health food stores like Whole Foods would be the perfect start. Additionally having that tea available in fancy restaurants to be offered after dinner would be a great way to introduce it to people who haven’t sampled it before and that would create a demand when that customer goes grocery shopping and actively seeks out that particular tea.
As The VP of Marketing says in the video “It’s about knowing your consumers and where they are shopping, and making sure where they are shopping, they can find our brand”.

Demographic segmentation as described in the textbook as “segmenting markets by age, gender, income, ethnic background, and family life cycle”. (pp 129) So they are identifying college educated females, so that means they would be over 22 yrs of age. College educated means they would probably have a good job and would fall into a higher income bracket and can afford the 2/3 boxes of tea each month. Their lifestyle would be something that they care about what they are putting into their bodies, so they only go for organic foods and shop at places like Whole Foods etc.

As described in our book as “the process of grouping customers into market segments according to the benefits they seek from the product” (pp 134). In this case these consumers wants something that is a better alternative to coffee and is good for your body, and it is also sources through fair trade, so its good for the world.

Family Life Cycle as family life cycle is described as “a series of stages determined by a combination of age, marital status, and the presence or absence of children” (pp132)  As the VP of Marketing explains “ So consumers we are reaching out to and cultivate more are definitely college students” and “ we hope to have them as tea-drinkers throughout their lives” . So their strategy is to introduce these organic, good-for-you teas early in their lives, and whatever phase of life they go through, Numi teas would still be a part of their lives.

Income as described by our textbooks as “popular demographic variable for segmenting markets because income level influences consumers’ (pp 131) wants and determines their buying power”. So consumers who go to high end spas and fine restaurants would obviously be in the higher income level and if they find Numi tea there, then they will automatically associate Numi tea with luxurious items.

Product Differentiation as described by our book as “a positioning strategy that some firms use to distinguish their products from those of competitors’ (pg 140).

Concentrated Targeting, because “If the chosen segment is too small or if it shrinks because of environmental changes, the firm may suffer negative consequences.” (pg 139). As mentioned in the video, Numi Teas has had a conflict where some think that anything that’s available in luxury spas or fine restaurants shouldn’t be available at Costo, but Numi Teas believe that this premium products should be accessible to anyone who is interested in consuming a “presmium product at an affordable price”.

“Optimizers consider numerous suppliers (both familiar and unfamiliar), solicit bids, and study all proposals carefully before selecting one.” ( pg 136)  So these companies are looking for premium teas which they know their customers would enjoy.

Perceptual mapping is “a means of displaying or graphing, in two or more dimensions, the location of products, brands, or groups of products in customers’ minds”. (pg 141) So Numi Teas can simultaneously reach both consumers, ones who go to high end spas and fine restaurants and ones who shop for value at Costco because what they both have common is to find a “premium product” that Numi Tea provides.

Reflective View of an Internship

Reflective View of an Internship

Theories to Practice
Interns should be Stimulated to use learned skills in a real world contexts. The internship should be creating goals that foster motivation, Enable interns to evaluate and calculate their personal progress. Interns should be using a variation of management strategies and tools to build connections between indistinct concepts and reality-based scenarios. Interns pushed to work together to solve problems and engage in discussions learn important team building and problem solving skills. (Pappas, 2013)
Communication is an important part if internships. The company should provide interns with an introduction to the program, culture, and the tools of the trade. Communicating with the intern regularly is very important, to provide information and answering any questions they may have. Interns should have direction, instruction, and a good support team to help them integrate into the program. (DePaul University, 2015)
Personal Experience
My personal experience with the the internship company has been stressful and unrewarding. I was very pleased to learn that I would be the Manager, and that is where the good feelings stop. I have not received any training or instruction on how to fulfill my duties as the Radio Manager, or even what they are.  There have been no tasks given to my section. I have not even been able to acquire the proper log in information for the software I am to be using.
I have however, made the most of the information I have. I have watched you tube videos on the software provided and learned everything I can from the very vague PowerPoints I have received. Communication has been set up with other new interns; we share the information we all have so we can at least learn something.
Professional Assessment
The company is a business under the umbrella of a consulting company. The first week of this internship has been stressful and unrewarding. There has been no training, or direction given to inform the interns of the tasks and requirements asked of them. After a week the internships should, at the very least, know what the job description is and a little of the process to get it done. There has even been problems with receiving the correct log in information to the software, which is regularly used. It appears as if the only people communication are the ones with no answers, trying to figure it out.
Practiced Course Outcomes and Professional Competencies
The course outcome for this week, as seen in the rubric, is to evaluate information management, planning and control in business systems. The only evaluating I have done has been in this essay I have not planned anything nor have I had any control in business systems. I have feelings of abandonment, confusion and the feeling of being completely lost.
I have however, been part of a few meetings which I feel where done well for what they were designed for. The communication in my chain of command is good and prompt, we just do not know anything.
Solution
The company needs to implement a job description chain to pass down from outgoing intern to new incoming intern in that position. In the last week of an interns work they should update the information given to them when they first started. This information will reflect any changes or shortcuts that may have occurred during their stent in the position. Doing this, will help the incoming intern better understand what The company expects from them.

Experiential Learning Can be Difficult

-->

 Experiential Learning Can be Difficult

           For many students at Kaplan University, the decision to engage in a degree program came to them at a later part of their life. Many have already been an active member of the working community and decided to return to school to open new doors and offer better opportunities. The conversation of returning to college after years in the workforce is not an easy one. Many are intimidated by younger students and professors, while others are overwhelmed by the increased demand for their time. This is not a decision that should be entered into lightly nor is the decision to embark on an internship, but here we are.
            After spending countless hours’ writing papers, finishing assignments and participating in classroom discussion, students are now awarded the opportunity to apply the learning in a simulated working environment. The process is as stressful as the rest of the college experience. You are the new kid in the meetings trying to keep up with the seniors. The seniors are trying to integrate new interns into the program while managing their heavy workload as well. Communication is all electronic which offers an added level of frustration and confusion. Several emails are received daily with instructions of yet more programs you need to learn.
            Regardless of all the stress and anxiety that accompanies an internship there is also the excitement of the opportunities that can follow. The best way to reduce the amount of stress an intern is feeling is to be as organized as possible and schedule time everyday to work on the program. On-line internship differs from a traditional internship in the sense that first impressions, how to dress and what to bring, does not apply. It is harder to make an on-line impression and so you do this with being on time for the meetings, checking emails regularly and engaging in conversations with peers. For some of us, an internship is the end of a two or four year journey of completely assignments on time and engaging with fellow classmates and our professor. The internship affords us the opportunity to apply the structure from the class room in an environment similar to the one we will be entering after graduation.
            Life is not perfect, nor is the process of apply for a job. It would make sense that the internship process also has its flaws. Being organized and creating a set of goals for the program is a great way to ensure you will get the most out of the internship. Experts also state that interns which are proactive and take part in shaping their goals and assignments have a better experience. This shows the supervisor that you are a key player and will produce quality work. As an intern you must also be careful not to over promise and under deliver. Many times an intern is overexcited for the opportunity and then disappoints the managers when the work load turns out to be too much for them.
            Through the journey at Kaplan, students have experienced several different professors that all had a very different style and approach to teaching. The constants that students could rely on were the discussion posts, deadlines and seminars. Assignments and quizzes were all handled very different depending on the instructor. The professors were preparing us for life after college and now the knowledge that was gained can be applied to the internship. Along with the knowledge that was gained, students can find useful information on the internet that can give them a leg up for success.
            Allison Green talks about the top 10 tips for a successful internship and many of them can be applied to an on-line program. First, know what to expect and if you are unsure ask questions. Many of the interns have suffered from confusion with their job description and placement. However, confusion happens in life and it is the responsibility of the student to ask questions and be persistent until they are clear as to the expectations. It is then advised that an intern gain trust early to show that you pay attention to details and are here to work. Staying focused on your work, mirror others behavior and taking your work seriously are all ways to be successful in an internship program.
            Even though an internship is unpaid, real work experience goes along way when applying for a job. Many new employers want to see a college degree as well as some real-time experience before they consider a candidate for a position. The downside is that you need experience to get a job but can’t get experience without a job. Internships are the bridge that employers are looking for and there is always a chance that an intern can be offered a position at the company once they have finished school. For this reason and for your own credibility, it is important to treat an internship like you would any job. A strong work ethic is something that is instilled into people and those that have one also has a tendency to be more successful.
